The Flipped Bob Is the Unexpected Hair Trend of the Summer

When it comes to the biggest hair trends of 2023, there is no denying that there has been one cut in particular that’s totally taken over: the humble bob. Yes, it’s a timeless style, but the reason it’s been everywhere this year is down to its versatility. Whether it’s an ultra-precise blunt bob, a voluminous Italian bob, or a Y2K-inspired graduated bob, there’s a short style for every inclination. And just when you thought we might have been all bobbed out, another take on the trend looks set to dominate for summer. Enter: the flipped bob.

Taking inspiration from the centre-parted, flicked-end styles of the ’60s, the flipped bob is a timeless haircut that has been reworked for 2023 with slightly more polish. “It’s a sophisticated, power haircut,” says Session Stylist and BaByliss Ambassador, Syd Hayes. Unlike a classic bob haircut where the style is often defined by sharp edges and blunt ends, the flipped bob has a somewhat softer finish where the ends of the cut flip upwards—you can go for a gentle curve or a more dramatic upwards flick.

And the best thing is that it’s super-easy to recreate the flipped bob hairstyle at home, especially if you already have short hair. According to Hayes, all you really need is a hair straightener. “Smooth the hair then before you get to the ends, curve the tool in an upwards motion to get that flick at the ends,” he explains. The key to a modern flipped bob? Make like Rochelle Humes and keep strands slicked-back to really show off the shape of those ends.

Incredible hair colour aside, Saweetie’s take on the flipped bob hair trend proves that throwback styles can look so damn cool.

Super-short bobs or pixie cuts look super cute with flicked-out ends, too.

I might be veering into lob territory with this one, but Billie Piper’s cool flipped cut looks wonderfully retro. Simply obsessed.

I adore this low-maintenance approach to the flipped bob with the most subtle upwards turn at the ends of the hair.

The key to this look is a good pair of straighteners to get that really sleek finish and to flick up the ends of your hair.

“After straightening you’ll want to mould the shape into the desired style and gel products are great for this,” explains Hayes. He rates this one from Sam McKnight for keeping that flipped bob in place.

When creating a flipped bob on curly and Afro hair types, Hayes rates this product “to slick hair back and create a gorgeous, sleek finish”.

“If you have super fine hair, it might be worth adding some grit and hold to the hair using a texture spray,” says Hayes.

Keep your flipped bob feeling fresh and modern with an ultra-glossy finish. A couple of spritzes of this will add plenty of polish.
