These Are the Only Fall Trends I’m Actually Shopping This Year

We’re deep into fall, and I’m afraid if I don’t savor the moment, the opportunity to wear the trends I’ve been looking forward to all year will pass me by. I’m a big fall girl, but not in the pumpkin-spice, cozy-knits way—I’m more into the distressed-leather-jacket and tall-rider-boots vibe. I live in Los Angeles, so I usually don’t get to wear these pieces until the middle of October. Luckily, in this in-between time, I can turn to Macy’s to help me curate the best fall wardrobe.

And I’m not alone. My colleague, Indya Brown, also lives in Los Angeles and is in the same boat. I caught up with her to talk about the best fall trends out there and how she’s incorporating them into her wardrobe. Needless to say, she’s serving looks. Below, see how she’s styling her favorite pieces this season.

Tell me about your jacket of choice. One of the coolest trends to emerge this season is the distressed leather jacket. Equal parts bomber and car jacket, the silhouette of this season diverges from the typical moto jacket in that it dabbles a bit in “dad fashion” territory. One of my favorite designers made the jacket the centerpiece of their F/W 22 collection, and from there, it really took off. I’ve been hooked ever since. Let’s talk about fall accessories. What are your favorite trends, and why? Y2K-inspired bags are really my current obsession. I’ve been stalking resale sites to grab iconic bags from the ’90s and early ’00s—the more logos the better. I think that’s why I was strongly drawn to the Coach hobo bag that’s emblazoned with its signature logos.

What’s your favorite pant trend this season? Cargo pants have really proven their worth this season. I’m not going to lie—I didn’t immediately jump on board with the trend, but once I started to see them styled in different ways, I slowly changed my mind. I’ve been adding them to my closet since last year, and they’ve really become a foundation of my daily wardrobe. I love how cargo pants can toe the line of edgy and sophisticated depending on how they’re styled. For instance, I chose to go for a sultrier night-out look with the addition of heels and a corset. As the spring 2023 runways have also proven, cargo pants are seemingly here to stay. If you could only have 10 items in your wardrobe this season, what would they be, and why? For sure I would choose cargo pants, a distressed dad jacket, tall knee-high stiletto boots, baggy trousers, a column maxi skirt, a simple button-down blouse, soccer-inspired sneakers, a sheer maxi dress, a flower choker, and a corset.
