Sheer Knits: The “Naked” Trend That Will Take Over in 2023

From “naked” dresses on the red carpet to completely see-through wedding looks, sheer pieces have carved out a major place in fashion recently. While many of these daring pieces might feel unapproachable to wear IRL, the spring/summer 2023 runways are offering up a new interpretation that feel more wearable—but just as cool—in the form of gauzy knits.

The transparent knits were spotted throughout the season, but some collections are predictive of how we’ll see them styled next year. At Miu Miu and Prada, we saw matching sets of tops and skirts—looks that likely will be heavily in demand for magazine editorials but will also gain just as much demand among the street style set. Other brands including Tory Burch showcased tissue-like knit tees with visible bras layered underneath—an updated take on the second-skin turtlenecks and mesh tops that were huge last year. If you’re an early adopter, now is the time to get a head start on the gauzy-knits trend that is set to be huge next year.

One of the most approachable ways to wear the gauzy-knits trend? Barely there transparent tees with visible bras styled underneath, as seen on the Tory Burch runway. Take these to the next level by pairing them with a sheer skirt as well.

Prada was one of the brands making the strongest case for the gauzy-knits trend with its take that included matching sweaters and skirts. Similar to Tory Burch, the brand styled the sheer pieces with visible underwear. If you’re interested in wearing the look now, pieces from A. Roege Hove should be on your radar.

We’ve discussed ribbed knits at length over the last several seasons, and it appears we’ll have plenty of reasons to keep that conversation going into 2023 because the updated versions include sheer styles as spotted on Paloma Elsesser on the Marni runway.

While the red carpet versions of sheer dresses leave little to the imagination, the knit versions we’re seeing on the horizon for 2023 are slightly more covered up, making them more wearable—but you’ll still need to strategize your underwear.
