Prediction: This ’90s Dress Trend Is About to Be Huge

Over the past several seasons, we’ve seen the rise of ‘90s fashion in a major way. Sleek minimalism from the decade has returned with the rise of low-key, ultra-luxe staples, the return of pieces that would have been found in the closet of the late Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and the resurgence of ‘90s runway looks that have resurfaced which are inspiring the looks of editors and fashion insiders. That momentum isn’t slowing down. In fact, it’s picking up as we look forward to the spring/summer 2023 collections.

Though there were a range of ‘90s-inspired pieces in the runway shows—from slinky slip dresses to pared-back suiting—the predominant item to know is the tube dress. Spotted in collections including Prada, The Row, and Khaite, tube dresses are coming back in a huge way and there are some key iterations to know. Ahead, see the styles to buy for the upcoming season and the items to start wearing now.

We have been talking about the maxi trend at length, but you can rest assured that it isn’t going away anytime soon. If you’re looking to bring it into 2023, sleek tube dresses are the way to wear them, as spotted in The Row’s collection from Paris fashion week.

I’m predicting a rise in satin items—tube dresses or not. The elegant material was prevalent in the S/S 23 collections in a way that feels much more impactful that the last several years, so now is the time to double down on the pretty, shiny pieces.

For a more casual take on the tube dress, opt for a slinky style. Christopher Esber, as always, perfected the silhouette, but there are also some stunning takes on it you can find right now from brands including Saint Laurent and Zara.

If you haven’t heard already, bubble dresses are back. I’m specifically interested in the strapless variety, which were in heavy supply on the Prada and Khaite runways. I already know these are about to be huge next year.

When it comes to peak elegance, I think about the sequined tube dresses from the S/S 23 runways that were perfected on the Rokh runway. If you’re looking to take the tube dress trend up a notch, why not add some sequins into the mix?
