Media, Cancel Culture Ignored ‘SNL’ Trump Hate, Target Bill Burr Instead

Remember all the outraged headlines over “Saturday Night Live” mocking a sitting president’s medical diagnosis?

What about the Twitter accounts featuring preferred pronouns attacking the show for its ghoulish humor?

No? That’s because neither woke progressives nor the mainstream media shared an ounce of anger over it.

“SNL” repeatedly mocked President Donald Trump’s COVID-19 infection, which he apparently overcame in mere days, during the show’s season Oct. 3 debut. Host Chris Rock sent “thoughts and prayers” to the infection, the Weekend Update segment broke down the humor behind the diagnosis and guest performer Jim Carrey called it a “karma” and “science” cocktail.

Select conservative outlets recoiled at the coal black humor, understanding the show would never do anything remotely similar to an ailing Democrat. “SNL” famously crooned a goodbye song to both President Barack Obama’s White House tenure and Hillary Clinton’s political career.

On Saturday, “SNL” host Bill Burr told a few politically incorrect jokes and the reaction was far different.

Burr blasted Cancel Culture, for starters:

… explaining that it’s come to the point where “they’re literally running out of people to cancel.” “They’re going after dead people now. They’re trying to cancel John Wayne. It’s like, God did that 40 years ago,” he said.

At the end of his monologue, Burr discussed Pride Month in which he asked if a month is “a little too long” for the celebrations. “For a group of people that were never enslaved. How did they get all of June?” He further argued that, in comparison, Black people only get “28 days of overcast weather” in February. “How about you hook them up with July?”

The Hollywood Reporter framed the reaction from the far-left, giving random Twitter opinions more clout than, say, a conservative’s response on any given topic.

Some blasted Burr writing “How about you NOT pick hosts who say things like ‘Gays weren’t enslaved’ Even if his ‘joke’ is to point out Black people suffered more,” one user tweeted. Others criticized Burr for referring to white women as “bitches.” “Bill Burr’s opening monologue is just obnoxious and misogynstic. It’s 2020. Someone tell him calling women ‘bitches’ isn’t funny,” another user tweeted. His monologue was also described as “the worst monologue” seen in years.

Even the praise cited by the far-left Hollywood Reporter trashed Burr’s Cancel Culture critiques.

So why would the media reaction be so different between week 1 and week 2 of the show? It’s simple.

The press openly loathes President Trump. The evidence is impossible to ignore, an organic extension of the press’ existing liberal bias.

More interestingly?

The same media adores Cancel Culture. Sound outrageous? Think about the reaction to “No Safe Spaces,” a film with an apolitical message about the attacks on free speech on, and off, college campuses.

Critics mocked the movie. Reporters mocked the very concept behind it, a muscular defense of free speech.

Imagine that.

Antifa types, and those who silently cheer them on, similarly failed to defend the movie’s premise. It’s not a surprise. The modern far-left abhors free speech, and it shows.

Both the media and the far-left crowd attacks anyone criticizing or defying Cancel Culture. Dave Chappelle recently blasted critics for savaging his Netflix special “Sticks & Stones,” an attack primarily based on Chappelle’s knack for politically incorrect humor.

It’s also why we never see think pieces criticizing other Cancel Culture victories, like when Scarlett Johansson removed herself from a film role due to the woke mob’s venom.

So it’s hardly surprising to see media outlets and far-left types do the same against Burr.

Cancel Culture is about progressive power, not making society a kind and just space for all. The Burr reaction reminds us of just that truth.
