Literally Every Person Of Color Who Had A Speaking Role On “Girls”

Gluekit for BuzzFeed News

Since its inception, Girls has gotten a lot of criticism for its lack of characters of color, considering it’s a show set in Brooklyn.

More people of color did appear as minor characters as the seasons progressed — Seasons 1 and 2 both had less than eight PoC say one word, a rate that tripled in later seasons — but Girls’ central characters are all white.

Now that the series has completed its run on HBO, it seemed like the perfect time to take a look back and break down all the PoC who had speaking roles on Girls throughout its tenure. (Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner were unavailable to be interviewed for this story.)

From notables like Sandy (Donald Glover) and Karen (Jessica Williams) to every babysitter, doctor, and receptionist, I present to you a list of literally every PoC to speak on Girls.

1. Joy Lin

When she appeared: Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot”
Who she was: A fellow intern with Hannah
How many episodes she was in: 1

Unlike Hannah (Dunham), Joy Lin (Elaine Chun) got hired after their unpaid internship because she knew Photoshop. When Hannah left after getting fired, unbeknownst to Joy Lin, Joy Lin yelled for her to pick her up a Luna Bar and some SmartWater while she was out.

2. Hannah’s gynecologist

When she appeared: Season 1, Episode 2, “Vagina Panic”
Who she was: Hannah’s gynecologist (Sakina Jaffrey)
How many episodes she was in: 1

Hannah’s “Forrest Gump-induced AIDS phobia” popped up when she realized Adam (Adam Driver) might not be monogamous. So, she went to get tested by her gynecologist, who informed her in the next episode (over the phone, so you never saw her face again) that she had HPV.

3. One of Hannah’s sexually harassed coworkers

When she appeared: Season 1, Episode 4, “Hannah’s Diary”
Who she was: One of Hannah’s sexually harassed coworkers
How many episodes she was in: 1

Selenis Leyva was the first of many Orange Is the New Black actors to guest star on Girls (the series shared the same casting director, Jen Euston). Leyva played one of the coworkers Hannah told about being sexually harassed by their boss. The plot twist was that they all had been, but they went along with it because he gave them nice stuff, like an iPod Nano. Levya’s character, whose name wasn’t said in the episode, also decided to give Hannah a quick eyebrow makeover while they were in the bathroom, but she only made things worse.

4. Two babysitters in the park

When they appeared: Season 1, Episode 4, “Hannah’s Diary”
Who they were: Babysitters in the park
How many episodes they were in: 1

During Jessa’s (Jemima Kirke) stint as a babysitter, she sat with three babysitters in the park (one of whom was an Asian woman who never spoke). They all thought Jessa was an actress until she assured them, “I’m just like you.”

Later in the episode, she tried to unionize them until the black babysitter realized Jessa’s kids had gone missing. They all went searching for them in the playground, Mission Impossible-style, until the black babysitter ultimately found them and saved Jessa’s ass.

None of these characters had names in the episode, and they were credited as Jamaican Nanny (Sidné Anderson), Salvadoran Nanny (Angelic Zambrana), and Tibetan Nanny (Jo Yang).

5. Tako

When he appeared: Season 2, Episode 1, “It’s About Time”; Season 2, Episode 2, “I Get Ideas”

How many episodes he was in: 2

After receiving lots of criticism for having zero characters of color who weren’t extras, Season 2 of Girls opened up with Hannah’s first and only black love interest of the series, Sandy, played by none other than Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. We can’t exactly call them boyfriend and girlfriend, since he was more of the post-relationship “let’s just have fun” guy. They ended things in the second episode of the season because he didn’t like an essay of Hannah’s and she didn’t like the fact that he was a Republican. In their mortifying breakup scene, Hannah accused him of fetishizing her, quoted a lyric from Missy Elliott’s “Work It,” then told him she doesn’t see race. He asked her to leave and never come back.

Who she was: Booth Jonathan’s assistant (Jorma Taccone) turned art gallery owner.
How many episodes she was in: 4

Booth Jonathan’s quirky assistant, Soojin (Greta Lee), was the first Asian-American character to have a recurring role. And by recurring, I mean she popped up again in about four more scenes the next season: Marnie (Allison Williams) ran into her at a yogurt store and found out Soojin was opening an art gallery in Manhattan and clearly doing way better than she was. He decided to turn their one-night stand into a weekend fling after finding out Hannah hated the beach. He was actually given a backstory unlike most of the characters on this list, including the foreshadowing that his only goal was to be who his dad wasn’t. This portrait episode made more sense later in the season when we found out Hannah was pregnant as a result of their no-strings-attached fling.
