I’m an NY Stylist, and I Think This Color Is Replacing Brown

Caitlin Burke knows a thing or two about trends. The stylist and creative director has been in the industry for years, earning her fashion chops with Moda Operandi, Harper’s Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan. Suffice to say, when she has a hunch about an upcoming color trend, we listen. Via email, Burke told us:

“Ever since I discovered a cotton poplin Jil Sander blouse in an unexpected yet perfectly rich chocolaty brown hue in early 2021, I’ve been totally hooked on the color. At the time, it felt like a new neutral, and I hadn’t really seen cotton poplin done in that shade before. It became my colorway of choice for seemingly every new purchase. Lately though, I’ve found myself gravitating toward its natural successor: a deep wine-ish berry color

“To clarify, it’s not so much that this merlot shade is replacing brown; it’s more so just replacing my obsession with brown. I think the last few seasons spent acquiring chocolate-hued pieces has left me craving an equally rich companion to them. And although brown pairs well with lots of shades (a major part of its appeal), few feel as luxe as this oxblood color does to me right now.”

The double lapel coat is making a big comeback this season.

This shade of wine manages to add a level of richness to an already incredibly luxurious bag.

We’re loving this darker bordeaux, especially when paired against a bright orange lining.

When you’re color-intrigued, but not sure if you’re ready to commit, a more reasonably priced accessory is a great place to start.

No surprise that Bode has already caught on to the impending trend.

Proving that wine is not only the new brown, but possibly the new black as well.

A to-the-floor skirt does wonders when you’re looking to get a bit of length and height.

A structured bag is always a good way to add a pop of color.

We’d love to see these paired with an all black outfit to really shine.

Pleats always manage to add a nice bit of interest and texture.

Can you tell we’re big fans of the knee-high boot this season?

These would look exceptionally glamorous paired with another gem shade, like an emerald-colored top.

Matte tights in any color other than black add a touch of fun and whimsy to an outfit.

Ruching is always incredibly flattering. The side ties are a nice Y2K nod as well.

We’re always in favor of a cozy, cropped sweater.

This would make a great winter wedding guest option.

Wine just looks so right paired with velvet.

Pair these with a top in a similar shade for an eye-catching monochromatic look.

We’d wear this with a pair of baggy jeans and sneakers for a more laid back look.

Loving the 2000’s era Avril Lavigne vibe we’re getting from these.

When you need a break from your everyday black slip skirt, why not reach for this one?

There’s just something about a wine-colored sweatshirt that feels so classic.

Deeper jewel tones are a great way to upgrade your basics while still keeping them wearable.

In our opinion, Mango’s really been outdoing themselves lately.

Where’s Waldo, but make it fashion.

A little edgy, a little preppy, these loafers are beyond versatile.

A wonderful alternative to the tan, black and grey beanies we normally gravitate towards.

A heavier-knit skirt is always a nice option for the cooler months.

A classic crew neck in our new favorite color has a vintage feel to it that we can really get behind.  Up Next: French Girls Laugh When Americans Wear These Winter Trends
