I’m a Vintage Shop Owner—These Are the 9 Trends I Recommend Buying Secondhand

One of my earliest (and fondest) childhood memories is scuffling through racks of musty old clothes at the local secondhand store with my mother. It’s a shopping ritual I wholly believe lead to my enduring and adoring love affair with fashion. To this day, there’s still nothing quite like the thrill of bustling through thrift and vintage stores to find a one-of-a-kind piece that you know no one else will be wearing. Moreover, I love the benefits of secondhand shopping (it’s cost-effective, favors quality over quantity, and, encourages sustainability), and it’s a topic I’ve truly come to understand and appreciate as I’ve matured.

While my job as a fashion editor is about covering all things au courant—from the most cutting-edge brands to the latest It-pieces, and contemporary designers—I still maintain a deep-rooted connection with vintage. So much so, that this year I founded my very own online vintage shopHyacinth Vintage, where I sell beautiful pre-owned and vintage gems that integrate easily and seamlessly into the modern wardrobe. And because there’s nothing I love more than merging my vintage prowess with my knowledge of current trends, today, I wanted to highlight some of this season’s biggest trends that I highly recommend buying vintage or secondhand. Not only will you find something more unique and individual, but if you’re like me, you’ll probably hold onto these vintage pieces for much longer than you would something you found at a fast-fashion retailer.

So keep scrolling as I share some of the trends worth buying from a plethora of amazing online vintage shops and pre-owned retailers.

Where better to get this season’s vintage-inspired collar trend than from an actual vintage shop? There are plenty of chic and charming variations all over Etsy and our favorite secondhand sites.

If there’s one trend that defines fall 2020, it has to be a sweater-vest. Whether you opt for a neutral hue or fun print, there are plenty of unique vintage options out there to throw over your tee, turtleneck, or button-down this winter.

The F/W 2020 runways were rife with shearling jackets and plush shaggy coats—leaning into the ’70s trend—prefect for procuring secondhand.

Call them house dresses, nap dresses, or frolicking dresses. The non-restrictive, breezy frock leans into this year’s prevalent cottagecore trend, and you’re guaranteed to find some great vintage gems online.

If you want to elevate your sweater game this season, opt for a collared polo-style knit top. They exude a cool retro touch yet feel fresh and of the moment.

Chunky collar necklaces continue to reign supreme this season adding a bold touch to our outfits. Opt for vintage chokers with unique details that are sure to be a conversation starter.

We love a cardigan that looks like it could have been stolen straight out of your grannies’ closet. Whether it’s a chunky cable knit or a sweet knit with floral embroidery and appliqués, they’re a fashion-girl favorite offering endless styling possibilities.

When it comes to tailoring, it’s all about loose and relaxed silhouettes that feel comfortable and look chic. Many vintage ’80s silhouettes lend themselves perfectly to the trend.

Cozy-chic matching knit sets are all fashion girls want to wear right now. They’re not only comfortable but look seriously luxe too.
