I’m a Fashion Director, and These 5 Trends Will Define Spring 2022

As an editor, I have kind of a knack for predicting trends. However, there are some people in the industry that I still look up to when thinking about what’s “it” in fashion for the season ahead. Since I scan the market of Shopbop on almost on a daily basis, it makes sense that the site’s fashion director, Caroline Maguire, is one of those said people It’s her job to direct for one of the largest fashion e-commerce sites, so trust me when I say her sartorial opinion is one you should listen to.

When I asked Caroline what she predicts to be the overall vibe for Spring this year, she gave a response that got me excited to get dressed for the next season. “Bright, cheery, and optimistic. This spring, fashion will be all about having fun and getting excited to pick out outfits again! We’ve been seeing a lot of casual looks paired with statement pieces—not sacrificing the comfort we’re now used to, but dressing it up. I’m excited to see how designers continue to experiment by mixing prints and bold colors, incorporating funky jewelry, and detailing with embellished accessories.” If that response isn’t enough to get you to excited for the season ahead, I don’t know what will. “Punchy primary colors! This includes your entire Crayola box of colors – not just red, blue, and yellow, but marigold yellows, bubble gum pinks, electric greens, and cobalt blues. Not only are they on-trend, these colors are guaranteed to boost your mood. Try styling pieces of the same color for a monochromatic look or play around with different shades – the bolder the better.”

“The cut-outs we saw this winter are here to stay, because after what feels like endless quarantining, everyone is ready to show some skin! Designers are delivering with deeper cuts, asymmetrical hems, and leather fabrics for a sexier feel. If you’re not in the mood to bare it all, cut-out looks can be layered with your favorite white tee, tank, or a poplin blouse – there are so many ways to wear this trend!”

In the world of denim, a carrot tapered cut, and denim trousers and pants in general are ‘it’ this spring. These styles offer an updated, and even more relaxed look than the straight styles we’ve been living in.

Spring fashion is in full bloom with retro florals! Ultra femme and vintage florals in bright pastels are definitely the print of the season. I’ve also been seeing a large emphasis on daisies, fully embracing the nostalgic 70s vibe which I love!

“The baby doll dress is back and I am here for it! This is an uber feminine look, and designers are making it their own with oversized balloon sleeves, tiered tulle fabrics, and even embellished collars. Lean into the girly look with strappy heels or go for a more casual feel, layering a fitted cardigan on top with a pair of chunky loafers.”
