If Our Editors Could Only Buy 3 Pieces for Winter, These Would Be Them

The coziest season of the year lies ahead, and I for one, can’t wait to cocoon into a plush oversized knit sweater, watch The Holiday (on repeat) and drink hot cocoa until my heart’s content. In the sartorial department, there are a few essential pieces that I undeniably want in my life with winter on its way—a chic shearling coat, knee-high chunky boots, and elevated loungewear are high up on my wish list. While I’m certainly shopping a little more practically this season, the items I’m loving certainly don’t sacrifice on style. Curious to see the must-have items my fellow editors are buying this season, I posed them the question—if you could only buy three pieces this winter what would they be? Scroll below to find out what our editors had to say.

“I think about this coat a lot. It’s definitely a splurge but I think it’s something I’d wear for years. And just think of how cute it would look belted. Oh, the possibilities. But that said, this coat is a great, far more affordable alternative.”

“Have you ever seen faux leather pants as good as these? I haven’t. They’re going to sell out quickly, so consider yourself warned.”

“Since I already have black stompy boots, now I want a tan pair (this brown pair, specifically). They would look so cute with straight-leg jeans and a chunky sweater.”

“I can’t stop thinking about these amazing chunky knee-high boots and would style them with everything from a sweat shorts set with a trench coat to a ribbed knit dress.”

“I’m going through a jumpsuit obsession and this utility-style version from Frankie Shop is topping my wish list.”

“Loose, ripped jeans are the only style of denim I’m wearing these days.”

“Collared sweaters are one my favorite pieces right now since they’re so easy to wear but the collar detail adds a trend-forward element. I’ve been wearing this exact knit on repeat recently so I can vouch that it really is a staple piece for fall and winter.”

“Tall chunky boots are trendy, yes, but they’re also delightfully practical for the season with their rubber lug soles. I’ve added this pair to cart and plan to style them with oversized jackets and bare legs.”

“I love my sweatpants, but they deserve a break. More elevated lounge pants like these ribbed knit flares are really all I want to wear at home right now.”

“Since I’m spending most of my time at home this season, I’m looking for elevated loungewear that is versatile, comfortable, and are unique in some way. This comfy one-and-done knit jumpsuit is easy to wear in and out of the house. Plus, it comes in this season’s trending chocolate brown hue.”

“For me, the most important item to invest in during the cold-weather season is a chic and cozy winter coat. Even if you decide to go out in your PJ’s at least you can cocoon yourself in a stylish statement winter coat! I’ll be opting for a chic and trending shearling coat to comfort me through the season. Bonus— this one is reversible.”

“I’m living in sweaters this season, so I’m on the lookout for knits with unique and modern details. This cutout cable-knit from Ganni is the perfect balance of chic and cozy.”

“Hoodies are a staple in my wardrobe. This comfy pick in the camel color is definitely on my shopping list.”

“I basically want to live in these slides all season long. They look so comfy.”

“I want a statement sweater that’s chic and cozy for Zoom meeting and such. This eye-catching style is on my wish list.”

“Honestly, there’s no other shoes I love quite as much as statement boots. And I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this patchwork white bootie from Sam Edleman. It strikes the perfect balance between trendy, and classic.”

“Without fail, jewelry has been the one thing I constantly put on every day. Demi-fine jewelry is one of the few things I don’t feel guilty about buying at the moment. More recently, I’ve had my eyes on these hoops from Frame and Mejuri’s limited-edition collection.”

“I’m going through an extended obsession with leather, and when I spotted these pink leather jeans from the sustainable made-to-order denim brand Revice, I immediately had to get my hands on them. I love collecting pieces you can’t find anywhere else, and I have yet to see many people rocking colorful leather separates. Plus, I love buying at least one statement piece to get through the season.”

“I rented this before from Rent the Runway, and it’s a coat that I have not stopped thinking about. It looks so forward but also provides great warmth, I think I might have to pull the plug and purchase it this winter.”

“I love a good chunky boot, and the Doc Marten Jadon boot is a classic cool-girl staple. It immediately adds an edgy look to any outfit, which I love. I definitely can imagine myself stomping around in them through the colder months.”

“If there’s one thing I always invest in, it’s jewelry. My mother taught me that jewelry is timeless and is something that should be passed down through generations, so that’s always how I view it. These gold rings by Misho resemble art and have been on my wishlist for a while now.”

“Some might look at this coat and think it’s unpractical, but all I see is the only coat I will be wearing for the rest of winter. While yes, the checkerboard print is bold, I am confident it will be just the piece I need to liven up my wardrobe that is currently filled with one too many “boring” basics.”

“My mesh Ganni turtlenecks are my absolute favorite items in my wardrobe and this winter, this warped houndstooth version is my new go-to. I plan on layering it under sweater vests and coats alike.”

“I feel like I am always on the hunt for the perfect pair of straight-leg black jeans, and this SLVRLAKE pair might just be the winner. Since I tend to wear more black than blue jeans come the winter season, investing in a nice new pair is always worth it for me.”
