I Was a Nordstrom Buyer—I’m Giving Up Skinnies and Wearing These Jeans Instead

I recently saw a post from Susie Wright, the former Nordstrom buyer and current stylist I consistently turn to for styling inspiration, that piqued my interest. On her IG page and blog, So Susie, she mentioned that she’s personally giving up skinny jeans this year. Specifically, she said, “I believe we can wear whatever we want whenever we want, but I do think skinnies should scoot aside.” I thought there could be interest in exploring this with further insights from Wright.

In reality, skinny jeans certainly fall into the “classics” category. But as Wright eluded to, there are other denim silhouettes she’s going to be wearing more and more of this season. These are also styles she’s recommending to her clients.

Keep scrolling to check out Wright’s favorite denim trends along with styling references and product recommendations. But remember, as Wright mentioned, you should always wear whatever you love, regardless of the trends someone else may prefer.

“A slim straight-leg jean is the easiest way to transition from a skinny jean! It’s only slightly wider at the leg opening and is equally as versatile. Pretty much any style of shoe works, from boots to sneakers to strappy sandals.”

“Flare jeans, like the ones I’m wearing in the picture, elongate your legs! I was in L.A. recently and noticed them everywhere. When it comes to alterations on flares, it doesn’t affect the flare by shortening it a bit. I get asked that question a lot.”

“A high-waisted, wider-length jean is so chic, and it’s ideal for both day and night. In the spring, I prefer a cropped style, but longer lengths are also stylish and fun. The wide-leg jean never really goes out of style.”

“A slim jean with a slight flare is a good option for a wider flare, and it’s equally as flattering. Whether you prefer a longer length or a cropped style, this is another skinny-jean alternative. I love wearing mine with strappy sandals and a pretty blouse—perfect for any night out.”
