When I first saw the trailer for You on Netflix, ngl I thought it looked terrible. “No one asked for Gossip Girl meets Pretty Little Liars!” I yelled at my laptop. But in that weird time between Christmas and New Year’s, when you lose all concept of what day it is or what you should be doing, I logged onto Netflix (because what else was I gonna do), and there was You. And I thought, screw it, I’ll give it a go.
Fast forward 12 hours and I had watched the WHOLE DAMN THING. It was completely addictive and so damn compelling. Penn Badgley plays a grown-up, more violent version of Dan Humphrey and it works perfectly. This is definitely his best work to date, and I say that as someone who has watched him in that blue devil body paint on loop way too many times. The show itself is a scarily on-point exploration of toxic masculinity and the ways we are so often seduced by dangerous men. It’s also incredibly campy and ridiculous and I loved every second.
