I absolutely loved it, BUT once I dug more into the plot and rewatched some scenes, I realized that the film itself wasn’t really self-realized. It was written by a white screenwriter and it really shows. The whole plot shifts away from targeting the cop who shot Starr’s unarmed friend, to instead, demonizing the neighborhood drug dealer and fueling the “black-on-black crime” trope. That, and Amandla Stenberg’s entire performance being a series of shots of her with a clenched jaw, made me realize it just wasn’t that good.”
