Justine Bateman spoke for many when she said she can finally breathe again after Election Day.
‘Family Ties’ star @JustineBateman says Trump’s election lifted ‘suffocating cloud’ on free speech: ‘There’s room for all opinions. There’s room for all thoughts,’ Bateman says https://t.co/PewjHySrCv

The American people spoke loud and clear. It’s time to turn the page from the Biden administration. Donald Trump 2.0, Bateman said, would let people speak their minds without fear of retribution.
That’s how culture was in the 1980s, when Bateman rose to fame via “Family Ties.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Cancel Culture takes a knee under President-Elect Trump. One A-list star seems inspired by what we’ll call The Trump Effect on speech.
Sean Penn.
The two-time Oscar winner blasted political correctness during Saturday’s Morocco’s Marrakech Film Festival gala. Penn, never one to hold back his views, spoke forcefully against his fellow liberals and how they’ve made it harder to embrace free speech back at home.
He cited a 2018 debate between British star Stephen Fry and clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson to set his argument in motion.
“While Steven is a very progressive-minded person, he criticized the liberals on the other side of the aisle for what that liberalism has become in the United States… “Around the world [there is] this demand for diversity — but not diversity of behavior and not diversity of opinion or language. I would just encourage everybody to be as politically incorrect as their heart desires and to engage diversity and to keep telling those stories.”
Hollywood stars have mostly stayed silent on Cancel Culture and attempts to dilute free speech. Many stars cheered social media giants for banning Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots. They mostly stayed mum as “sensitivity readers” censored classic books by Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming and Agatha Christie.
There were exceptions, including Ricky Gervais, Rob Schneider, John Cleese and Bill Maher.
The vast majority of celebrities, especially A-list types like George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Scarlett Johansson, said nothing.
Now, just weeks after Trump’s resounding victory, Penn is speaking out against the woke mindset. He didn’t use that phrase, but it’s precisely what he meant.
