Tom MacDonald is making it increasingly hard for music journalists to ignore him. But oh, do they try.
The indie rapper doesn’t have a label or corporate partners to push his music. Instead, he leans on state-of-the-art music videos and his growing fan base. It’s made his music go viral time and again on YouTube, with some tracks like “Fake Woke” garnering more than 34 million views on the platform.
He also scores big on iTunes’ download charts.
Yet most major entertainment outlets pretend his fame isn’t happening. Nothing to see here. Move along. They ignore his success at their own peril, credibility wise.
The “Snowflake” musician has defied the odds, yet again, by skyrocketing up the charts with his newest song, “End of the World.”
Except this time MacDonald had a sizable assist from country music royalty.

John Rich of Big and Rich fame collaborated with MacDonald on the track, a pessimistic takedown of culture with a country twang as its hook. Rich, like MacDonald, doesn’t take kindly to Big Tech censorship or a music industry which treats right-leaning artists like second-class citizens.
That made them both unlikely bedfellows and natural collaborators.
The accompanying video is from MacDonald’s squeeze, the talented Nova Rockafeller who designs all her beau’s clips.
The core song is pure MacDonald, brimming with his edgy raps and propulsive beats. Rich enters as the hook, his sweet voice complementing the dystopian vibe.
A little country, a lot of rap and one big hit as the result.
Our billionaires are going to space, don’t blame them leaving
Birds are falling out the air, fish washing up on our beaches
This is end time, humans got a deadline
Children were the future till we ruined them with headlines
Should be past their bedtime but everyone’s woke
They told us “chase a dollar” then made everyone broke
I feel like cryptocurrency is probably our last financial hope
Rich has been at war with Country, Inc. for a while now, frustrated by the industry’s narrow vision when it comes to artists and their ideologies.
“The wave of wokeism that’s hit this country and especially the entertainment business—that made its way to Nashville. So, these artists are sitting there and they’re being told by their publicist, their managers, the heads of their record labels, ‘Hey, we know that you think these things about America, that you’re against kind of all this woke stuff that we do’—they don’t call themselves ‘woke,’ of course….
Is there freedom and art in Nashville, like total freedom? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. It’s sad.”
MacDonald is a perpetual thorn in the system’s side, able to circumvent gatekeepers to build a massive fan base and rack up iTunes hits on command.
