Tom Hanks is the closest thing Hollywood has to Jimmy Stewart.
The 66-year Oscar winner brings a Stewart-esque vibe to some, not all, of his work. He’s the Everyman facing insurmountable odds, aided by his wit, intelligence and the occasional volleyball.
Off-screen, Hanks has led an exemplary life by movie star standards. No scandals, no outrageous acts that fuel tabloid headlines for weeks on end.
And, in between, he seeks to be the gold-plated soul of our nation. He lived up to that task at the dawn of the pandemic when he went public with his COVID-19 diagnosis. Many voices, including some in the media and government, stoked fear and panic at the time.
Not Hanks.
The “Saving Private Ryan” star calmly shared his recovery process.
Hanks even embraced President Donald Trump at the dawn of his presidency, wishing him success as an American president.
To say that measured approach was uncommon in his industry is the understatement of our age.
More recently, Hanks lent his gravitas, his star status, to the Biden Administration. Hanks narrated the one-year anniversary of Joe Biden’s first term in office.
We’ll return to his Biden ties in a moment.
Earlier this week, Hanks gave the commencement address at no less than Harvard University.
The actor’s comments, ranging from sober to whimsical, left graduates with this important message.
“For the truth to some is no longer empirical. It’s no longer based on data, nor common sense, nor even common decency … telling the truth is no longer the benchmark for public service. It’s no longer the salve to our fears, or the guide to our actions. Truth is now considered malleable, by opinion and by zero-sum endgames.”
“The responsibility is yours. Ours. The effort is optional. But the truth, the truth is sacred. Unalterable. Chiseled into the stone and the foundation of our republic.”
Has Hanks met, or read a few news snippets, about President Biden?
The 80-year-old leader may be the biggest liar of our age. His lies are large and small, personal and pathetic, designed to ratchet up dissent and distort.
Look no further than him saying not once, but several times, that his son died in Iraq. That comment speaks to either his gross incompetence or failing mental state.
Last week in Japan, Joe Biden yet again falsely claimed that his son, Beau Biden, died in Iraq.

Then again, even as a much younger man Biden stole others’ words to make him sound better.

Biden’s associates are even more embarrassing in how they torture the truth.

Politicians lie, of course. They do so for partisan reasons, to defend their record or to gain electoral advantage. Some of President Donald Trump’s whoppers were bigger, and more outrageous, than his predecessors.
Few are as dedicated to the not-so-fine art of lying, though, as Biden.
Hanks didn’t have to lend his good name to the Biden campaign last year. And he’s right to promote truth at a time when too many leaders lie, distort and smear.
If Harvard graduates are to take him at his word, he should apologize for aiding and abetting the Liar in Chief.
