The “Dated” Shoe Style Celebrities Suddenly Can't Get Enough of

As a fashion editor, my finger rests on the pulse of the celebrity style set—constantly taking stock of which new trends they choose to endorse, and last night I spotted one surprising new suspect on the red carpet at the 33rd Annual Gotham Awards in New York City. Sported by some of the most fashionable guests, peep-toe shoes were seen in equal abundance as sleek slingbacks, sharp pointed-toe shoes and strappy sandals. The once-forgotten shoe style has been cropping up more and more in recent months as brands continue to experiment with the proportions of their clothes and accessories. Pioneering the revival, Miu Miu’s A/W 23 collection championed the classic shoe, which we have seen other designers and brands endorse as we move further into winter. Now, as party season approaches, it would appear that the peep-toe is officially back, and by the look of it, celebrities couldn’t be happier.

Styling the somewhat divisive shoe, Margot Robbie opted for a sleek black leather iteration for her red carpet appearance. An avid fan of the peep-toe, Robbie has been seen in them at star-studded events and casual outings alike for many seasons now. Riffing off the Barbiecore trend that she pioneered during the summer months, her elegant styling of the peep-toe mule retained a vintage quality that worked so well with her strapless midi dress, but would look equally chic with long trousers or a sparkly mini.

At the same event, Penelope Cruz wore a pair of black peep-toe heels with a white, floaty, bohemian-style dress and a sleek black bag. Whilst peep-toe heels can be styled with cocktail dresses and longer gowns to formal events, the cutout detail lends the style a casual nature that can pair equally as well with billowy silhouettes.

Perhaps the biggest peep-toe fan of all, Victoria Beckham has been known to favour the style for most of her evening occasions. Styling her well-loved pair with fishnet tights and a draped maxi dress, the designer made a case for the revival of the “dated” shoe on her Instagram feed last month. If you’re considering digging into the depths of your wardrobe to revisit those peep-toe heels you used to love, this is your sign to do so.
