The Anti–Short Shorts Trend That Every Cool Person I Follow Is Wearing

As much fun as a pair of hot pants can be (for the right occasion, that is), they’re not the most practical summer bottoms. Shockingly short and necessary to adjust every few seconds, the buzzy celebrity trend has its pitfalls, which is probably why their opposite has made a run for fashion’s top spot in the shorts department. And even with all of the bad publicity that Midwestern dads (I can say that because my dad is one) have gotten for Bermuda shorts, the very appropriate hot-pants alternative has managed to campaign their way into every fashion girl’s warm-weather wardrobe.

All the proof you need that Bermuda shorts are having a moment exists on my Instagram feed, which I’ve combed through meticulously and recreated below. Showcasing the best styles to go with and subsequently, what to wear with them once you pick a pair of your own, let the forthcoming selection serve as your primary guide to the trend. Scroll down to get started.

If they’re good enough for chic French girls like Sara Ramén, they’re certainly good enough for me. Here, the model slash chef styled black Bermuda shorts eloquently with a high-neck tank, gold ankle-strap ballet pumps, and matching jewelry.

Though I usually think of Bermuda shorts as a summer staple, this look on Danielle Jinadu proves that they are equally chic when styled in the chillier months of the year, with knee-high boots and a stellar leather jacket.

It doesn’t get more classic and elegant than a crisp, white tee styled with a sleek belt, super dark-wash Bermudas, and black sandals. If you’re ever stumped about what you should wear in the summer, reference this photo and all of your problems will be solved.

The quiet-luxury, old-money aesthetic is pretty much just this outfit, which includes a Chanel chain-link flap bag; minimalist, flat sandals; a super-white tee; and long, tailored shorts. There are no logos in sight, but everyone will know your outfit is expensive.

I know the shorts-with-boots look used to be a major faux pas, but in 2023, it’s anything but. In fact, I think that it’s one of the chicest ways to style your shorts, as long as you opt for a longer, tailored pair and extremely sleek boots. A blazer on top is perfect the finishing touch, but you already knew that.

Meghan Markle just wore these in the chocolate-brown color. You know what to do.

For those extremely warm summer days when you have to go into the office, Bermuda shorts and a matching, tailored waistcoat will be your best friends. Pair them with ’80s-era earrings and some kitten-heel pumps for maximum compliments.

I’m pretty much smitten with all things khaki-colored lately. Though white and black bottoms will always be present in my wardrobe, there’s something so laid back and cool about a chino, especially when it’s in Bermuda-shorts form and styled with a gorgeous pair of sandals.

Sometimes, wearing baggy trousers with a baggy shirt can feel like too much; like you’re drowning in fabric. Whenever I want to wear two oversize pieces without them overpowering my frame, I opt for Bermuda shorts instead of pants. Always wear this pairing with heels though, as it adds an elevated and formal touch to the otherwise casual ensemble.
