In the past month, I’ve found myself walking the streets of New York, London, and Paris. They’re considered fashion capitals for a reason—they always know what’s ahead of the curve before anyone else does. And while researching them through the online lens may look easy, it can still be tricky to figure out what’s being worn for a social media moment and what’s actually being worn on the streets. Luckily for you, I kept a running list of things I saw everyone wearing. I might have been on vacation, but I couldn’t help it, I was inspired. Since I just got off the plane 48 hours ago, I can share my research with you fresh in mind.
While each city is known to have its unique sense of style, I surprisingly found a plethora of similarities while visiting each. My travels didn’t just give me a mental refresh, it sparked the sartorial side of my brain just the same. As a modest dresser, maxi hemlines have always been a part of my wardrobe. But with the style seeing more light in the past year, I’ve found myself with a brain chockful of outfit ideas. New Yorkers opted for leather options, Londoners wore slinky slips and Parisians wore their skirts lowrise with some midriff.
Whether you love or hate ballet flats, there’s no denying that they’ve made a huge comeback. While Parisians have always been fond of the shoe, and I also happened to see them plenty on the current streets of New York and London. Mostly, I saw them with mini skirts and straight-leg jeans. Add an oversized sweater or slouchy blazer and you’re ready to take fall in style.
I’m used to seeing cargo pants styled with the New Yorker sporty essence, so it was a refresh to see them worn in a more elevated manner while in London and Paris. No matter what kind of look you gravitate towards, you’ll get a lot of use out of the relaxed pant this season.
Gone are the day of mini bags, and in are larger than life carryalls. It makes sense, why should those who trek big cities like London, Paris, and New York City resort to tiny bags that can’t fit their on-the-go essentials?
I know this seems like a statement trend you’ll only find on the ‘gram, but I was just as surprised at how many silver details I saw in real life. Whether it was a simple locket or a full-on sequined skirt, the fun trend paired well with minimal pieces.
While I attended fashion shows in New York and London, sheer pieces were featured in almost every runway collection. The trend presented itself not only on models, but I also spotted the risque style heavily amongst the fashion set. It may have been styled in a more laid-back and relaxed manner than the runway looks, but nonetheless, it looked just as cool.
This may not be a trend that’s revolutionary but I’ve been seeing a sweater used as an accessory more than ever. Mostly, I’ve seen them tied around the waists of dresses, serving as a cozy belt. I’ve found it useful when a simple outfit needs a little special something and the residents of the fashion trifecta seem to agree with me.
