James Olsen is ready to become more of a hero in National City on The CW’s “Supergirl.”
While he’s already helped out against aliens and criminals who have caused trouble in the town, in Tuesday’s episode, he’ll make his debut as Guardian, helping to face off against a parasite alien that drains Supergirl’s powers.
“The world needs more heroes,” Mehcad told reporters on a visit to the Vancouver set of “Supergirl” earlier this month when asked about James’ stepping into this new phase of his life.
Mehcad said he’s enjoyed the character development that takes James beyond covering the news and serving as interim boss at CatCo.
“[I]t’s really cool to be part of that world as an actor — just to look at bad guys and not just pull out the camera all of a sudden or look to my super friends,” he said. “It’s a big growth process for sure for James and also for me because it just makes my job so much more fun.”
James said playing Guardian has allowed him to tap into his athletic side.
“I’m really athletic and I took martial arts as a kid and later, in my adult life as well,” he said, adding, “I’m really having the time of my life.”
Supergirl herself hasn’t seen Guardian just yet, but when she does, her reaction will be unexpected, Melissa Benoist said.
“You’ll definitely see how she reacts to him coming onto the scene,” Melissa said on the same set visit. “You might be surprised by the way she does [react].”
“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8/7c on The CW.
