There’s no set way to do New Year’s, and over time, everyone develops their own traditions. Whether it’s watching fireworks along the Thames, sipping cocktails with old friends or cosying up with a cup of tea, it’s the perfect excuse to let your hair down and celebrate with your favourite people.
This year, team Who What Wear all have very different plans when it comes to the countdown, but it’s safe to say that each and every one of us has been planning our outfits for weeks. We can’t help being fashion nerds, okay? The plus side to our overzealous planning is that we now have a wide range of looks to inspire your New Year’s style. You’re welcome.
So if you’re currently running around like a headless chicken (we’ve all been there), let us give you a little helping hand. There’s something for everyone, from Rebecca’s party-perfect trousers to Emily’s comfy cashmere, Poppy’s chic day-to-night dress to Sophie’s unforgettable fancy dress. Scroll down to see (and shop) what the Who What Wear team are wearing this New Year’s Eve. Happy New Year!
Style Notes: “I intend to end this year wearing all the trends I loved writing about most. Feathers! Sheer! Pink! Silver! This outfit is a bit OTT, but that’s what New Year’s Eve is all about for me—full-throttle, unapologetic glamour. Also, I’ve been waiting for the perfect excuse to go all out with my new Isamaya Industrial Eye Palette, which I got for Christmas—this is it.”
Style Notes: “Usually found in sequins, this year, I’m switching up my NYE style to showcase my favourite tailoring and simple dresses. I’ve had this blazer in my wardrobe for years, and having usually worn it with jeans or black tailored trousers, I’ve recently realised just how good it looks with my collection of satin slip skirts and dresses, too. Throw in some statement heels and some sparkly earrings for good fanciful measure, and I’m ready to sing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at the top of my lungs with a glass of fizz in hand.”
Style Notes: “This year I’m determined not to be hungover on New Year’s Day, so we’re escaping to the countryside to have a quiet, cosy one. I’ll probably spend the night curled up on the sofa watching Jools Holland with my dog and husband, so no sparkles required. I still want to feel like I put some effort in, though, so I plan on packing this luxurious cashmere set and the best slippers in the world.”
Style Notes: “For New Year’s Eve, I am heading to a James Bond–themed party. I love the chance to dress up, so I want to go all out this year. My inspiration has come from Rosamund Pike in Die Another Day. She looks stunning in head-to-toe silver and thought it was the perfect look to bring in the New Year. I love this glittery fringed dress from Karen Millen, I think it has the perfect Bond Girl look with the high slit. These Jimmy Choo sandals and Benedetta Bruzziches bag are the perfect edition to complete the look.”
Style Notes: “Anyone who knows me knows I really don’t do New Year’s Eve. In fact, some of my favourite NYEs from days gone by have been spent on the sofa with my dog, mum and boyfriend. Chic, right? However, this year, I’m actually putting some effort in and will be heading out to brunch with family before a casual dinner with friends and drinks come evening. For this, I’ll need an outfit that can take me from day to night, and nothing fits the bill better than a great midi dress. I’ll wear my midi of choice with knee-high boots for a bit of polish, and a coat to fight off the cold of course!”
Style Notes: “My favourite thing about NYE in London is the fireworks, and this year we’re heading up to a park to take in the views of the skyline. Standing in the cold means that sequins and sparkle aren’t practical for me this year, so instead of my usual slip dress, I’ll be layering up in cosy shearling and some sensible (but stylish) footwear.”
