Howdy, internet folks! Today, I'd like to talk to you about memes. More specifically, the Dawson Crying meme.

In case you weren’t alive at the time (I was five), the meme comes from 1998’s hit series Dawson’s Creek. (A lot of them are ’90s themed, fwiw.)

Actor James Van Der Beek, aka Dawson IRL, said, “I love it. It’s my favorite thing about the whole show. It’s hilarious to me that you can work for six years on a show…and it gets boiled down to three seconds. It’s a perfect way-of-the-internet.”

He continued, “I feel like everybody on this show cried more than I did and I was the one who got caught in the loop!”

Although his co-star Joshua Jackson added, “It’s not how many times you cried. It’s how you cried.” True that, Joshua. True that.

It wasn’t scripted, I don’t think. I mean, it was appropriate for the scene. You know, it was just high drama; you’ve been living with this character for a while and a scene like that just kind of drops in your lap and you just lose it. They yell cut and say, “Oh my god. That was amazing!” So I remember being completely surprised by it because it was completely sincere. The fact that it’s being used to mock me now, I think it’s so funny.
