Let’s face it, if you live in the UK, you’ll be reaching for a wool jumper for about 70 per cent of the year. Throwing it over a mini dress as your travel to an event; keeping it firmly attached to your body before you admit it’s time to turn the heating on; stuffing it into your bag as you walk out of the door—just in case, a good wool jumper will accompany you through the winter months offering comfort of both the emotional and physical sort.
As a great fan of wool knits, I take the shopping process rather seriously. I’m quite uninterested in a wool jumper that is more synthetic than wool, thus I’ve carefully curated this edit with a few things in mind. Naturally I’ve looked for jumpers which contain very high wool percentages—most are one hundred per cent. As well as this, I’ve selected styles in timeless colours and cuts.
Believe me when I tell you that wool jumpers can be an investment, but if you keep a few things in mind, it’s very easy to make them last. I always recommend wearing your wool jumper with a crisp white tee underneath, to not only make your outfit look cleaner, but also to extend the time in between washes. When it does come time to wash, ensure you’re putting your wool in on a delicate cycle, or better yet, hand wash it yourself. Allow it to dry on a flat surface and always make sure you fold your wool—rather than hang it, to help the garment keep its shape. Of course over time you might find small holes on your jumper. Don’t fret, instead consider getting your knitwear repaired by a trusted tailor to extend its lifespan.
