I’ve Been Wearing the Wrong Bra Size—Here’s How I Finally Got It Right

Wearing the wrong bra size is like wearing the wrong shoe size: It’s uncomfortable, noticeable, and kind of ruins the whole outfit. But like many people, I’ve been there and vividly remember my first true bra mishap. Let me set the scene: It’s eighth-grade graduation, and my parents bought me a special strapless polka-dot dress with a pink belt. I got my hair and makeup done, stepped into my dress, and felt like a million bucks. A few hours later at the ceremony, my strapless bra started to shimmy its way down to my waist with my breasts fully out of the cups. Fourteen-year-old me was in full-on panic mode. All I wanted was for graduation to be over so I could just go home. Looking back, the only thing I really remember from that day is how self-conscious and uncomfortable I felt.

It’s taken a lot of trial and error over the years, but I’ve come to learn just how important a proper-fitting bra is. Not only does it serve as a foundation for every outfit, but it can make anyone feel more confident. “If you feel good, you look good,” says model Maxey Greene, who has been struggling to find a strapless bra that’s comfortable and fits well. That’s exactly why she was eager to try Wacoal‘s new mybraFit™ app.

If you’re not familiar, it’s an actual digital fit tool that you can use on your phone. (Scroll down to see for yourself.) All you have to do is answer four simple questions (shown above) to help determine your breast shape, and the app does the rest for you. “I was skeptical at first,” Greene confesses, but was pleasantly surprised when the bra was delivered. Bra shopping is intimate. Do you remember the last time you had a proper in-store fitting? Do you feel like you’ve avoided it for any particular reason? Why or why not?

Honestly, it was probably three years ago. I haven’t avoided it—it’s actually incredibly important for me to have well-fitting bras for work, so I have to make sure my size is constantly up-to-date. Unfortunately, with the lockdown, it wasn’t possible to go in-store, and then I got pregnant. I really just knew it was time for a refit.

I find bra shopping to be hard but especially online. What do you find challenging about it?

That sizing isn’t consistent! I can’t know for sure that I’m buying the right size of a bra unless I already have a long history with a brand.

Can you tell us about a time that an ill-fitting bra ruined your day (or your outfit)?

It was actually on a photo shoot. I was wearing a strapless bra (provided by the stylist), and it was way too big in the cup. It created a shelf, and everything looked terrible on me.

What are you looking for in a bra, and what are absolute noes for you?

I’ve been desperately searching for a well-fitting but comfortable strapless bra for summer. I can’t stand when a bra band is too tight and uncomfortable. If it’s digging into my back, I just won’t wear it.

I love that now there’s an easy and precise bra-fitting app that people can use at home. Before using the mybraFit™ app, what were you expecting the experience to be like, and what was the actual reality?

Honestly, it’s hard to trust things like this. I wasn’t expecting the app to get my size right, and even when it shared its recommended size, I was skeptical. But I learned that the Wacoal sizing is different from other brands, so I trusted the process and ordered exactly what the app recommended. The original size I ordered seemed a little too big, but I wanted to be sure, so I called the customer service line and was put in touch with a Fit Expert who answered my questions and helped adjust me over a video call. I was right—I needed one size smaller. They sent me a new size, and I was so pleasantly surprised when the bra arrived. The fit is perfect!

Would you say that the mybraFit™ app has changed your view on bra shopping?

It has definitely made it easier to do it from home! I love online shopping, but buying bras online is definitely one of the hardest things to do. The app makes you feel way more confident choosing a bra than ever before. The level of customer service I received is rare these days, but it totally made the experience.

I love that on your website, you say that everyone deserves to feel comfortable, confident, and at home in their bodies. This makes me think about how finding a proper-fitting bra can serve as a foundation for every look and give people more confidence to look and feel their best. Would you agree? Has finally finding a proper-fitting bra made you feel even more confident?

A proper-fitting, comfortable bra is key. If you feel good, you look good.
