I’m a Fashion Editor in My 30s—These Are the Brands I Shop for Chic Basics

High-quality and well-fitting basics are an essential part of my everyday ensembles. Whether worn alone or as a backdrop to a statement piece, they are the backbone of my wardrobe that I reach for and rely on daily. So it goes without saying that I spend a lot of time trying, testing, and discovering staples to find the most stylish and versatile pieces that work for me.

Now that I’m in my 30s and feel a lot more confident and comfortable in my own skin, I have a better understanding of the items I like to wear. While I’m always game to try new trends (I am a style-obsessed fashion editor, after all), I tend to favor basics that I feel comfortable in, fit into my lifestyle, and, most importantly, speak to my personal style aesthetic.

So today, I wanted to share some of my go-to brands I always make a beeline toward when I shop for basics. Keep scrolling to see and shop all my faves, from affordable, casual brands such as H&M and J.Crew to fashion-person favorites such as Bazilika and Refine.

When I’m looking to stock up on elevated and stylish tank tops that are of great quality and fit, I’ll always make a beeline to LNA. The brand’s basics are super soft, and it is always releasing fashion-forward takes on classic silhouettes.

When it comes to basics across all categories, Zara really has you covered. I particularly gravitate toward its of-the-moment blazers, loose tailored trousers, and knitwear when it comes to seeking out chic and modern basics.

When I’m looking to invest in a beautiful, timeless staple that looks luxe and will last a lifetime, I head to fashion-girl favorite Refine. The brand’s silky camisoles and slip dresses are some of the best day-to-night pieces I own.

If you haven’t already heard, J.Crew is officially cool again. Although, I personally never really stopped wearing its easy basics. I usually go for the brand’s Breton striped tees, preppy sweaters, and staple sandals—perfect if you’re a coastal grandma like me.

Donni is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to elevated yet comfortable staples that have a fashion-forward edge. Think elevated fabrics such as gauzy cotton and waffle knits that come in breezy, minimalist silhouettes that you can mix and match with practically everything in your closet.

When I’m looking for affordable basics that deliver on style but don’t need to be too precious about, H&M is a winner. I’m particularly fond of the brand’s oversize button-downs, sweaters, and pants.

Loved by fashion influencers and cool girls all over Instagram, Bazilika is the It destination for luxury basics that are simple yet striking.

Much of my weekend wear consists of Madewell jeans or shorts and relaxed T-shirts. They’re comfortable, reliable, and easy.

Understated, effortless, and elegant. When it comes to relaxed tailoring, minimalist dresses, and staple accessories, you can’t go wrong with COS.

Everlane is a no-brainer when it comes to trusty, timeless, and reliable basics. I reach for its classic shirts, tees, and shoes in my closet practically every day.
