There’s no denying that our home spaces have become more sacred than ever. Over the last several years, different practices to help protect our home spaces and transform them into intimate oases have become a major priority, and home decor expert and YouTube content creator Alexandra Gater is at the forefront of this moment. Connecting with millions through her home makeover videos on her YouTube channel, Gater has carved a niche for herself in making luxurious design techniques accessible for both renters and homeowners. Gater’s design ethos echoes the belief that everyone deserves to live—and thrive—in a beautiful space, no matter the budget.
Gater has amassed over 500,000 subscribers on YouTube, and her own website, which serves as a platform for her custom content that includes virtual makeover packages, product collaborations, DIY tips and tricks, and a collection of handmade Moroccan pom pom slippers.
With the goal to evolve houses into ‘homey homes,’ Gater is also releasing her latest project, a coffee table book, Own Your Own Space. Gater’s unique sense of space and perspective on inclusivity in the home has set her apart in the design space and even landed her on a Tedx Talk where revealed how she turned losing her dream job into an opportunity to launch a multi six-figure business she is truly passionate about.
However, before Gater found her passion within the interior world, she worked for the iconic Canadian lifestyle magazine, Chatelaine. There, she worked her way up from an intern in the art department to a full-time position as an editorial coordinator to eventually overseeing the entire Home section across the print and digital platforms — ultimately sparking her design interest. Listen to the latest episode of Second Life to hear how Gater found a career in curating sacred home spaces for others and where she plans to evolve her business.
