Queen Elizabeth II is being laid to rest today as the world watches on, and the moving images from the day are likely to be ingrained in our memories for years to come. It was a somber occasion, but also a celebration of her life and legacy. The beloved Queen served 70 years on the throne, so for most, she’s the only head of the British monarchy we’ve known in our lifetimes. Needless to say, today, September 19, 2022, will go down in history as one of the United Kingdom’s, and the world’s, most significant days.
The funeral began with the Queen’s coffin being carried from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey, where she was also married and coronated. The Queen’s final resting place will be St George’s chapel at Windsor Castle, alongside her late husband Prince Philip.
The state funeral service this morning was attended by the royal family, numerous world leaders (including President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden), and royalty from many other countries. But of course, many eyes were watching King Charles, Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle.
Below, we’ve gathered some of the most important and moving images from the day, which will be remembered in the world’s memories and history books.
Next, a look back at the time Queen Elizabeth sat next to Anna Wintour at London Fashion Week in 2018.
