Get Ready—These 6 New Coat Trends Are Coming in Hot

Can you feel it? Yep, crisper weather is creeping in whether we like it or not, and before we know it we’ll be transitioning from the light jackets we’re living in now to bonafide heavy-duty outerwear. That’s right, it’s time to talk about coats. As much as I lament the transition from fall to winter, the upside is that we get a fresh batch of coat trends to relish in.

As style people, we’re always looking to our favorite retailers and fashion friends on Instagram to inform what’s new what’s next. And when it comes to coat weather, we’ve officially spotted six new trends that will be the most important for the season ahead. From the fresh versions of classic wool toppers to the new age of puffer coats and shackets that make the seasonal transition much easier, continue on to read our 2020 outerwear report and shop our favorites within each category.

From blazers to trench coats and beyond, leather outerwear in every shape and form is here to stay. Style the sleek topper in a ’90s-inspired way with chunky boots and a shoulder bag for a forward spin.

While shearling is in the same family as fleece and faux fur which are relatively trend-proof, hairy shearing specifically are bubbling up as a coat trend to watch. Trust me, once you experience the ultra-cozy vibe of these, you won’t go back.

If you have a good thing going, why mess with it? While there are plenty of trendier toppers this season, those classic long wool coats are having a moment. Considering how chic, timeless, and polished they are, this is a coat you’ll have in your closet for years to come.

A shirt and a jacket had a baby and now we have my favorite transitional topper, the shacket. These are so popular because of how easy they are to wear—throw one on over your jeans or even your loungewear for an instantly cool vibe.

PSA: puffers are getting a new look. I know you know what a classic puffer coat is, but designers like Prada and Isabel Marant have reimagined them in unexpected shapes like a padded vest or padded blazer.

This winter is ushering in the successor to cottagecore, cabincore, and these quirky quilted jackets are perfectly aligned with the cozy, woodsy aesthetic. (Proximity to an actual cabin not necessary.)

Now that you’re updated on the coat trends of the season, check out the outerwear staples that are virtually trend-proof.
