Awkwafina, a successful Asian American actress who is starring in the new Marvel film Shang-Chi and The Legend of the 10 Rings, was slammed on social media for her previous use of “blaccent.” And yesterday she was asked about the use of the allegedly racist accent – and she was unable to give a coherent answer MTO News has learned.
In an interview with VICE, the Shang-Chi and The Legend of the 10 Rings actress spoke about being against the use of an Asian accent to portray an Asian character. “I refuse to do accents,” she reportedly said. “I’m not OK with someone writing the Asian experience for an Asian character. I make it very clear, I don’t ever go out for auditions where I feel like I’m making a minstrel out of our people.”
Awkwafina’s position is different when it comes to Black people. The actress/comedian routinely performs with a “blaccent” which many Black people find offensive, MTO News has learned.
