Hollywood actor Alex Baldwin has reportedly fatally shot a film crew member and injured another after he discharged a prop firearm on the set of the movie “Rust” in New Mexico.
Director of photography Halyna Hutchins, 42, was rushed to hospital via helicopter and pronounced dead by medical personnel at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
Movie Director Joel Souza, 48, was taken to Christus St. Vincent’s Regional Medical Center by ambulance for care. He is reportedly still alive.
Nobody knows how bullets ended up in the prop weapon. A spokesperson for the actor says the prop gun had blanks and that the actor misfired.
“According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged,” the statement from the Santa Fe County sheriff’s offices read. “Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”
In a statement, the International Cinematographer’s Guild said Hutchins’ death was “a terrible loss.”
“The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event,” said guild president John Lindley and executive director Rebecca Rhine.
