What on Earth Happened to Bill Burr?

Bill Burr is more than a “Paper Tiger” to comedy fans.

The Boston native’s counter-culture jokes helped pave the way to superstardom.

He wasn’t conservative by any means, but his willingness to call out woke’s insidious tentacles set him apart from the comedy mainstream.

His 2019 Netflix special “Paper Tiger” confirmed it. He was part of a rebel comedy movement alongside Tim Dillon, Shane Gillis, Theo Von, Tyler Fischer, Chrissie Mayr and more.

Refreshing. Real. Raw. Honest.

Necessary.

And then Burr co-wrote, directed and starred in “Old Dads.”

The 2023 Netflix comedy cast him as an older father whose parenting style clashed with modern mores. The film seemed like a stick in the eye to the woke scolds who helped bury great R-rated comedies and canceled stand-up comics.

Think again.

The film’s final moments pulled its punches, siding with the woke generation over Burr’s “old” stylings.

That was a sign.

Earlier this year, Burr took a stupefying position on the raging California wildfires. He attacked anyone criticizing Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass for gross incompetence.

“[The fires] were mismanaged? Like some idiot on the Internet knows how to manage the worst fire in LA? Sitting there in his underwear?” he told the host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

It’s not hard to connect the dots. Story after story detailed the many ways California Democrats made the fires worse, from defunding local fire fighters to calamitous water policies. Newsom steered millions to illegal immigrants while fire prevention policies suffered.

Plus, any reputable comic would shred Bass for being out of the country during the start of the blaze.

Not Burr. He came out looking dumb, to be blunt.

More recently, Burr blasted billionaires in the most ignorant manner possible.

“The amount of people struggling out there because of these f—ing billionaires, and they got us all arguing liberal and conservative,” Burr said. “We gotta stop doing that. I’m so tired of hearing about people going to bed worried about what’s going to happen next week.”

He was just warming up. He said people now need to work more than one job today to make ends meet. Why? Blame a billionaire.

“Because then the kids don’t see their parents, and they’re not getting the upbringing that they need. These f***ing billionaires… They need to be put down like f***ing rabid dogs,” Burr said.

Comedy works best when there’s a kernel of truth at the center. Where’s the truth in Burr’s rant? For what it’s worth, the capitalistic system that yields those eeee-vil billionaires has been pretty good to Burr.

He also blamed billionaires for pitting Americans against each other. If he wants to point fingers he should start with legacy media outlets which routinely stoke dissent.

Remember when reporters invented the term “white hispanic” to gin up racial animus following the death of Trayvon Martin? Or how they pushed the “hands up, don’t shoot” lie tied to Michael Brown’s 2014 death?

Then, consider how far-Left platforms like late-night television and “The View” work overtime to make us hate Red State America.

Burr doesn’t care, apparently.

It wasn’t the first time he comically threatened violence. He praised Luigi Mangione, the young man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson late last year.

“I love that f***ing CEOs are f***ing afraid right now. You should be! By and large, you’re all a bunch of selfish greedy f—ing pieces of s***.”

It’s not just billionaires in his crosshairs. It’s CEOs, too. Does he give these rants any thought whatsoever?

Now, he’s slamming X owner Elon Musk in the most incendiary way possible. He compared Musk to Adolf Hitler, claiming Musk personally flagged one of his X posts that said the Tesla owner’s awkward inauguration moves were a Nazi salute.

He unleashed this rant on his latest “Monday Morning Podcast” episode.

“What a f***ing baby, just like Hitler, … He’s not even from here, he’s from South Africa. He comes to this country and wants to turn it into a f***ing dictatorship  … he doesn’t feel that we deserve democracy.”

“Just imagine doing that, deciding, ‘I’m gonna change this form of government because I decided’ … he doesn’t mind living under a dictatorship if he’s on the good side of it.”

What on earth is he talking about? The harpies on “The View” wouldn’t stoop so low in their Musk attacks.

What happened to him?

He even attacked Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro for rightfully calling out his pro-Luigi Mangione rant.

“I don’t know who he is, but that guy is a j***-off,” Burr said in an interview with The New York Times this week. He dismissed Shapiro’s criticism as little more than a cash grab: “All he knew is if he put ‘woke’ on what I said, he would make more money.”

Burr is taking a hard-Left turn, no doubt. That’s his prerogative.

The problem is twofold.

The country is veering to the Right following the excesses of progressive leadership. He finds himself both out of step and siding with a movement that has fundamentally lost its way.

More importantly, is anything in his recent comments remotely funny? Angry? Yes. Ignorant? Sure. Ill-informed?

Of course.

Funny? Not so much.
