There’s something so enthralling about the rise of a new trend. It always starts the same, bubbling under the surface with a few individual sightings, and then suddenly, in the blink of an eye, a certain piece or particular style is everywhere you look. For months, I’ve kept track of one particular jewellery trend that’s slowly but steadily grown in popularity, shimmering on the necklines of everyone from fashion people to celebrities, and that’s the tennis necklace.
A sibling to the tennis bracelet, coined in the late ’80s after tennis player Chris Evert lost hers during a match, the tennis necklace can be defined by a single, repeating row of diamonds (or gemstones depending on your budget). The design itself is so classic, and one I’d originally written off as out of my price range, but in fact I found tennis necklaces a really varied range of price points and finishes. What’s more, its the way in which the tennis necklace is being worn right now that’s intriguing me most.
At one time, this kind of glistening statement would have been savoured for the very best of occasions, but in the spirit of the old money aesthetic, and potentially the mob wife trend too, all eyes are on elevating the everyday. I’ve spotted these stones embellishing the crew necks of simple T-shirts, draped over the necklines of soft jumpers, worn on their own or layered up with other chains and pendants. Of course, you can still pair this style with your LBD for you next big event, but this new way of wearing not only adds a little shimmer to the less extraordinary days.
