Jacquemus Is About to Make Pumpkin Pants Go Viral

Today, designer Simon Porte Jacquemus took over the Chateau de Versailles to stage his newest runway show, dubbed “Le Chouchou.” While compiling a list of the show’s top trends, I spotted a pair of orange bloomers I knew I had to include. Upon further research, I discovered a delightful phrase for the shorts that I hadn’t heard before: pumpkin pants.

Pumpkin pants, a form of trunk hose, were a popular menswear style in Europe in the 1500s and 1600s. The Shakespearean garment features a puffy bubble hemline resembling a pumpkin (hence the name). Jacquemus updated the old-fashioned look by designing them with an extra-short hemline, but he stayed true to the tradition of styling them over tights.
