I’m 39 and a Lifelong New Yorker—Here’s What I’m Wearing For Fall

Fashion editor Diana Tsui is the quintessential New Yorker—she was born and raised in the city, so she knows everything from the most efficient subway routes to the best eats across all five boroughs. But another factor that makes her “New Yorkness” so outwardly visible is her penchant for the color black. True to the adage that real New Yorkers prefer black, it’s Tsui’s power color whether her schedule calls for back-to-back market appointments or a fancy night out at the Gala. But it’s not the typical black shirt and trousers combo that can get monotonous fast—the editor leans on conceptual and experimental designers like Cecile Bahnsen, Simone Rochas, and Rei Kawakubu for moody pieces that still make a statement. Though Tsui still leaves room for color and flashy details where it makes sense. Needless to say, Tsui is an expert on what’s cool and worth buying to build out a cohesive fall wardrobe. Below we asked her about the top buys she’s had in mind for the season. Keep reading to see them all.

“I’m shocked that I don’t own Tabis considering how well they fit into my wardrobe. This season I’m planning to change that and get a pair. As divisive and popular as they’ve become on social media, the Tabis have been around for decades making them a classic that exists outside of the trend cycle.” —Tsui

“Being only 5’2″ on a good day, this Sacai skirt hits closer to my ankles so I think of it as my take on the maxi skirt trend. I love the sporty details and giant cargo pockets, also a nod to the current cargo pants revival. For fashion week I wore it with a sleeveless bodysuit and giant Simone Rocha platforms but the piece will be great with sneakers and a sweater once it gets cold.”

“I rarely wear denim but I’m very drawn to these Raey baggy jeans. They’re not exactly low-rise but low-slung, which I find to be a more flattering update to my denim rotation.”

“All of the new season Comme des Garcons has yet to hit stores but Noir Kei Ninomiya is a part of the CdG extended universe and always a brand I love. This top is an interesting layering piece that could be very cool over literally anything all year round. But I might wait until this goes on sale since it’s a little pricey for a layering piece.”

“Yes, I realize Rick Owens is very TikTok trendy but like the Tabis, this coat is a piece I’ve been eyeing for years. It’ll likely not be cropped on me because I’m so short but regardless, it’s the perfect winter coat. I’m also very into the oversized neckline which makes me feel like I have an outfit on, even if I’m just running errands.”
