It Doesn’t Take Much to Look Chic—Just Start With These 7 Simple Items

I often use the word simple to help describe my personal style.  While I won’t shy away from bold accessories or statement shoes, my clothing choices skew on the low-key side. As a result, many of the influencers I follow for inspiration have that minimalistic aesthetic. And trust, one scroll through my saved folder on IG clearly shows that it doesn’t take much to look chic. In fact, there are a few easy pieces basically everyone I’m following seems to wear to help create their forward looks.

The items in question are all simple in nature and extremely versatile. But simple doesn’t mean a skimp on style. The pieces—like sleek shirting and relaxed tailoring—are in modern cuts to give off that elevated silhouette. Keep scrolling to get a sense of what I mean. You’ll notice styling references and shopping picks if you want to add one of the pieces into your own offering.

The fashion crowd is embracing oversize leather jackets in a major way this season as a cool and simple way to bring dimension to a simple outfit.

I’ve highlighted this trendy basic a few times already this season as it’s also a go-to of mine. There’s just something so easy and elegant about a relaxed shirt.

You just can’t go wrong with a pair of straight-leg or wider-leg jeans for an effortless and always-chic look.

I couldn’t create this list without featuring this tried-and-true forward staple. A blazer in a slouchier cut will make legit any ensemble feel of the moment and chic.

When it comes to comfy pieces, leggings with a little something extra (like split hems) reign supreme as a wardrobe enhancer.

Whether it’s a wool maxi coat or trench, outerwear in a longline silhouette is the way to go for a polished vibe.

As you can see with many of the items on this list, looser-fitting pieces can often help create those more forward outfits—wide-leg trousers included. The relaxed sweater is also noteworthy here.
