You Don’t Need to Rationalize It: 6 Skirt Trends That Are 100% Worth Buying

I’m just going to say it: Skirts don’t get enough attention. Trousers and jeans are talked about constantly, as are dresses and even shorts. But skirts? No. They’re left to reside at the bottom of the sartorial food chain, worn frequently but never spotlighted.

But as someone who goes to no wardrobe item more than her skirts—long ones, short ones, denim ones, and leather ones—I feel it’s imperative that we discuss the oft-unmentioned silhouette and start giving it the kind of recognition it deserves. To begin, let’s look at the six skirt trends that will shape our wardrobes in 2022, straight off the S/S 22 runways. From micro minis at Prada and Miu Miu to see-through styles at Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Fendi, this year’s skirt selection is worthy of a top spot on the fashion pyramid. And once you’ve shopped them all, I have a good feeling that you’ll agree.

It felt like forever that midi-length dresses reigned supreme, with brands like Reformation and Rouje debuting cult-favorite styles in the late 2010s. According to the S/S 22 shows, though, the midi skirt has been replaced with something a little longer. Showcased at Gabriela Hearst, Peter Do, and Saint Laurent (to name a few), maxi skirts are most certainly having a moment right now.

The length is cute, and the color ain’t too shabby either.

Two for one.

Every influencer was wearing this during S/S 22 NYFW.

Another trending length for 2022? Micro minis, and when we say micro, we mean it. Spotted at Prada, Miu Miu, and Fendi by Versace, as well as at Blumarine and Missoni, teeny-tiny skirts might be small in size, but they’re making a huge impact on the fashion landscape right now.

This miniskirt will go with absolutely everything.

Pretty in pink.

If 2021 was the year of the naked dress, 2022 is the year of the naked skirt. Following appearances at Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Fendi, and Chanel, we’re betting big on the super-sheer skirt trend for spring and beyond. *Buys underwear that’s actually cute.*

Sheer but not too sheer.

The perfect party skirt.

This skirt combines two 2022 trends: sheer fabrics and maxi lengths.

If you thought micro minis were bold, just wait until you see the slits featured in this season’s skirt selection. Showcased on mini-, midi-, and maxi-length styles, S/S 22’s sliced-up skirts aren’t for the faint of heart. But then again, what fun would they be if they were?

Teeny tiny.

Finally, a faux leather that feels real.

This slit is next-level.

Be they inspired by prep-school uniforms or upscale garden parties, this season’s array of pleated skirts, both mini and maxi, is a step above any I, personally, have seen before. Elevated with bright colors, eye-catching fabrics, and interesting silhouettes at Rejina Pyo, Brandon Maxwell, and Sandy Liang, pleated skirts got one hell of a refresh for 2022.

The perfect mix of casual and formal.

This skirt will never not look classy.

The prettiest space dye and the prettiest slit.

Seeking out a way to take low-rise to the next level? Look no further than the hip dip, a skirt trend that involves waistlines that give more than just a sneak peek at your lower hips—it displays them completely. Seen at Versace (on Emily Ratajkowski no less), Balmain, and Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini, this hip-baring silhouette is giving low-rise bottoms a run for their money.

Just a peek.

Twist it to the side for a more noticeable hip showcase.

Yes, yes, and yes.
