Stylists spend all day shopping for other people, but what I want to know is what they buy for themselves. After all, they need to be comfortable enough for long days on their feet, and they also likely want to dress the part of their chosen profession as well. So I went straight to the source to find out what a stylist considers to be her wardrobe must-haves in 2021.
Dana Asher Levine is a Los Angeles–based stylist who counts Shonda Rhimes (pictured above) as a longtime client, as well as a host of other Hollywood executives and women of all ages and body types. She’s also the founder of The Clothing Therapist, which offers closet edits, event styling, editorial styling, and more.
The list Levine provided me with is a great mix of basics and trend-forward items, all of which are relevant to the new era we’re living in. Keep scrolling for her expert incite and to shop her must-haves.
“In the year of comfort, we learned how to make favorite leggings work at home and take them to the street.”—Dana Asher Levine
“The utilitarian classics ‘the combat boots’ are dominating this year. They are a great transition piece for between the seasons. You can find the boots in any market from Zara to luxury Prada.”
“Tracksuits made their huge come back during quarantine. We learned how to style them with a blazer and jewelry for a chic look or wear it with a coat in the city for everyday life.”
“The blazer has always been a classic work look. It has become an ordinary match for not only jeans but now, your loungewear set.”
“An old, ’90s favorite is back: wide leg for a comfortable baggy look.”
“The ultimate must-have is loungewear. Silk or monochromatic matching sets are now not only a home must-have but also perfect for walks around town.”
“One of the most essential pieces in your wardrobe. It’s an easy, go-to classic shoe that will take you from home to work and then to a party.”
“There’s an enormous boom of cashmere knitwear on almost every fashion runway this year. It is a total must-have for its comfort and cozy look and feel.”
“Among the world of fashion bags, the Cleo bag is essential. Pair it with any outfit to give off classic look vibes!”
“The must-have of all the must-haves this year is a mask in any color or print. Elevate the mask with chains and jewelry and match them with your outfits.”
