Shopping Experts Agree—These Are Biggest Spring 2021 Trends (At Least For Now)

The year 2021 is just around the corner and honestly, thank god. As we sit here itching for 2020 to end, the shopping professionals we’ve tapped ahead are here to assure us that the next year will be booming with enough sartorial goodness to at least semi make up for the past several months. The S/S 21 runways and collections set so many stunning new trends into motion, but according to Celenie Laura Fleur Seidel, Senior Womenswear Editor at Farfetch, and Caroline Maguire, Fashion Director at Shopbop, it is the handful of trends below that will be big this spring.

“A standout shape of FW20, the bubble dress reinstated its prevalence for SS21 (see: Loewe, Patou, Simone Rocha). Soft and pillowy, there is something in these cocoon-like silhouettes that speak to our need for comfort and protection in midst of the events of 2020.”—Celenie Laura Fleur Seidel, Senior Womenswear Editor, Farfetch

“With second-wave lockdowns being introduced globally, even those most resistant to succumbing to a leisurewear wardrobe are feeling more kindly towards introducing new, practical elements to their at-home getup. With collaborations like Molly Goddard x Ugg, slippers and house shoes are the anti-fashion footwear of SS21.”—Seidel

“2020 has seen the need for carrying a ‘proper bag’ fly out the window, with many of us turning to tiny, lightweight crossbodies just for the essentials, or turning to use once-ignored pockets to store keys, cards, phone, and sanitizer. True bag use is temporarily reserved for gathering groceries and essentials, reflected by the soft and woven-style ‘market’ bags from the likes of Fendi, Maison Margiela, and Burberry dotted throughout the SS21 collections.”—Seidel

“When it comes to our spring wardrobe, a pastel palette is always top of mind. Eye-catching shades get softer for the season. From cornflower blues and lilacs to baby pinks, to mint, these hues will be in every collection and I am excited to buy into this trend!”—Caroline Maguire, Fashion Director, Shopbop

“Even as the weather gets a bit warmer, we’ll still be loving this year’s homespun charm. Think nubby knits, easy dresses, and novelty cardigans paired with handcrafted details like eyelet and embroidered designs, intricate woven techniques, and peter pan collars elevate any look with an authentic flair.”—Maguire

“We’re all in need of some mood lifters in 2021, so bold fashion details are an obvious must this spring! Popping prints—animated florals, prominent polka dots, or gingham mixed with a few unexpected details and novel embellishments will definitely bring an optimistic outlook to our closets.”—Maguire
