As we round the corner into the final stretch of Fashion Month, I’m finding it as intriguing as ever to dissect the different qualities each capital brings to the table. As the cool older sister of the quad, New York Fashion Week gave us structured tailoring and reimagined classics. The city stuck to its roots with a splattering of eccentricity and effortless styling inspiration in spades. Meanwhile London Fashion Week was up for everything, as the city charmed us with trenches en masse, chic studs and plenty of pleats.
And of the lot, Milan Fashion Week has once again affirmed that more is more in the Italian capital. The skirts were fuller, the bags bigger, the tailoring sharper and the leather… well, it was everywhere. Our expectations were high for the country that gave us Versace , Gucci and Prada , but they were exceeded. Read on to discover my favourite street style trends from this Milan Fashion Week.
Style Notes: For those who erred on the smarter side, their tailored pieces were elevated with whip-sharp attention to detail. Clever pleats, practical folds and asymmetric layers polished the fashion set’s looks for a reconstructed take on formal dressing.
A subtle way to incorporate the asymmetric trend into your wardobe.
Shake up your workwear wardrobe by incorporating a playful twist.
This also comes in red and beige.
The perfect autumn evening dress.
Style Notes: Voluminous skirts swished across the Italian city’s streets, bringing a romantic twist to Fashion Week dressing. Oversized pleats detailed many of the styles, but we also noted large, billowy skirts aplenty.
The bigger, the better. This floor-sweeping maxi is everything I’ve been looking for.
Pretty pleats are a growing trend this season.
Style with mary janes or black boots.
This playful skirt imparts a feminine edge.
Style Notes: Whilst the London crowd can’t get enough of mary janes and New Yorkers love a silver shoe, in Milan it was all about the retro slouchy boot. Styled with minis, midis and maxis, the slouchy style brought an effortless edge to the looks of the city’s best dressed.
The perfect accompaniment to your favourite miniskirt.
Brown boots are about to be big.
Style with dresses, skirts or your favourite jeans.
We keep coming back to the burgundy trend for autumn.
Style Notes: When I said that more is more at Milan Fashion Week, this is what I meant. Even as the city continued to enjoy residual summer warmth, showgoers were wrapped from head-to-toe in leather ensembles. We spotted leather trench coats—a recurring theme this Fashion Month—chic leather shirts and plenty of leather bags.
The perfect leather trench comes from one of our favourite high-street brands.
So easy to style.
Smarten up your skirt collection with a leather midi.
Every wardrobe needs a reliable pair of black boots.
Style Notes: If we were to only mention one trend this Milan Fashion Week, it would have to be this. Spotted on the arms and wrists of a sizeable portion of fashion week attendees, Gucci’s reimagined Horsebit Chain Bag has truly sent the fashion set into a frenzy.
Metallics continue to shine bright this season.
Keep it classic with a monogram print.
Red accessories are the latest trend celebrities can’t get enough of.
The perfect black shoulder bag.
Style Notes: Amongst the sparkle embossed, leather-clad crowd there were some showgoers who opted to pare things back, with a focus on clean lines and enviable tailoring. Smart suits featured cinched waists, and dresses were perfectly fitted to the body for a sharp silhouette.
My personal all-time favourite blazer.
This elegant dress pairs perfectly with simple heels.
Structured maxi skirts are a sure bet this autumn/winter.
The perfect white shirt.
Style Notes: Elbow-length leather gloves completed the looks of many Italian showgoers. Tapping into old-money elegance, the fashion set styled their dramatic gloves with leather coats, floor-length gowns and black accessories.
These look more expensive than they are.
The ultimate luxury purchase?
Brown leather is a trend we’re investing in this autumn.
This supple leather will perfectly mould to your hands.
